What is Black August?

What is Black August?

What is Black August? It's a month of standing with political prisoners and prisoners of war. The core tenets of Black August are to FAST, STUDY, TRAIN and FIGHT 🔥.

Please join us Thursday, August 19 at 6 p.m. CST for a political education event with our comrade Hiram Rivera about Black August and how it connects to our current fights.

Hiram Rivera is the Executive Director of the @CommResourceHub, providing data, research and technical assistance to police reform organizations across the country. Prior to the hub he spent 14 years as a community organizer and former executive director of the Philadelphia Student Union working on the issues of Education Justice and Juvenile Incarceration.

Black August began in California prisons in 1979 and it began being practiced by Black freedom fighters throughout the country.

August covers a vast history of the Black struggle against America, with each day recalling a pivotal moment in the history of Black existence. Pivotal moments such as the first Africans arrival in Jamestown on August 20, 1619, the beginning of The Haitian Revolution on August 22, 1791, the murder of 14 year-old Emmett Till on August 28, 1955 and death of unarmed teen, Mike Brown on August 9, 2014 are just a few events tied to Black history in the month of August.
